The practice of tithing in the New Testament is often
discussed but rarely understood. Since many Christians don’t know how to tithe,
they avoid the topic altogether. This is very unfortunate because giving tithe
is one-way God has ordained for our prosperity.

When you understand what it means to give to God, you’ll
be more inclined to participate. The reason why many find it difficult to give
is that they lack a biblical understanding of giving.

Some Christians don’t believe in giving of tithe though
they have read many Bible verses about it. Some see it as part of Old Testament
teaching which was not established in the New Testament. They believe we don’t
need to continue in it.

Today, one controversial topic modern Christians have to
battle with is tithing in the new testament.
Verses in the New Testament where tithing is mentioned are few when
compared to the Old Testament. There God
gave specific instructions to the children of Israel about it.

As Christians, we are called to give our time, talent,
money, or whatever we have to God. We can do this when there are needs to be met
in any God-kingdom project. We received everything we have from God; hence He
can ask us to loan Him anything we have.

Tithing is one of the most talked-about ways of giving
in the Bible. It goes as far back as the Old Testament. The first person to pay
tithe in the Bible is the father of faith – Abraham in Genesis 14:20.

What God Says About Tithing

In the book of Joshua, God instructed the leaders of
Israel not to share give land to the tribe of Levi. God chose them to minister
in the temple, Joshua 14:1–5. Part of their duties is to collect the tithes of
the remaining tribes as their inheritance. That was the beginning of tithe
payment in the land of Israel.

In Malachi 3:8, God called non-payment of tithe robbery.
He said anyone who is not paying is robbing God and not man. He challenged us
to pay all tithes and offerings promptly and see how He will release unusual
blessings from heaven.

“Bring
the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And
thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the
windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no
more need,” Malachi 3:10.

The idea behind it is that we should give ten percent of
what we have. This should not be a difficult thing to do, since we receive so
much from God, but this is another area where some people argue about tithing.

They said God was not specific about the amount or
percentage of what to give, especially when it comes to tithing in the New
Testament. John Macarthur, a foremost American Christian leader said that the
Israelites gave between 20 to 40 percent tithe as against 10 percent that many
of us believe that God is asking us to give.

He argued that what they gave in the Old Testament was
income tax. It was needed to run the theocratic administrative system that
Israel was having then.

Tithes and Offering Scriptures in The New Testament

Tithes and offering scriptures in the New Testament are
scanty when compared with the Old Testament. The truth of the matter is that
there was no place in the New Testament where tithing was abolished or
condemned, neither the payment nor the amount to be paid which is one-tenth of
our income.

Jesus said he had not come to abolish the law but to
establish it. He condemned the religious Jews who love to obey giving tithe,
but disobey God in other aspects of the law. He called that hypocrisy and said
rather they should give the tithe, and also do other things that the law says.

Many don’t tithe because they feel that their income
will be reduced if they do. However, tithing does not reduce your income but
increases your assets. Every time you sow into something, you receive a blessing
in return. The more you give the more the Lord will bless you.

Tithing is a misunderstood and often disliked financial
practice. It can be hard to make sense of at first, especially for those who
are struggling financially. However, as Christians, we understand that tithing
was given to us as a commandment from God.

The bible gives many reasons why we should tithe. The
most relevant is that it is an act of worship and thanksgiving to God for
what he has done, and what He is doing in our lives and the world around us.

If you are wondering how to tithe effectively today,
remember that God is always faithful. You can never do enough for Him or give
too much to His work. 1 Chronicle 29:14 tells us that if we present our tithes
and offerings joyfully, the Lord will direct our paths and bless all we do.

We are living in a time where technology allows us to
tithe online, this is a means that we can employ to give tithe faithfully. Many
people have testified that they find it easy to transfer money electronically
rather than when giving checks or cash for any transaction.

This can be a solution for those people who find it
difficult to tithe. Even if you are not earning much, God wants you to give from
the little that you are getting now, so that He can multiply it.

The truth is that if you find it difficult to give tithe
when you are earning little, you will find it difficult to do when your income
increases.

The word of God is still true as it has always been. No
one should be surprised that some people are opposing tithing today. They have
equally opposed many Bible doctrines to their destruction.

The Bible has warned that in the last day’s many people
will not be able to stand sound doctrine. It is already happening now.

Instead of the following man, do what God says and reap the
benefits of obedience.

Should We Give Tithe to The Poor?

Anyone who needs something but has no capacity to get
it can be considered to be poor. God told the children of Israel that the poor
shall not cease in the land, hence they have to make adequate provisions for
them.

Some people believe that giving to the poor is
important. They give money, food, clothes, and other goods to people who are in
need. This is what the Bible asks us to do.

The question is, can we give our tithe to the poor
people around us? The answer is yes. Primarily, we need to give a tithe to the
priests and the Levites, but there is a category of tithe reserved for the
poor.

According to Deut. 14:28,29, God instructed the children
of Israel that every three years they should bring a separate tithe for the
fatherless, widows, and the strangers in their midst. They are to do this in addition to what they are giving to the priests. The third-year was called the
year of tithing which prophet Amos also mentioned in Amos 4:4.

While giving is important, the right kind of giving is
even more important. We must not mix the tithe meant for the priests with that
meant for the poor. As one is important so is the other. The Bible says to obey
is better than sacrifice and to hearken than the fat of ram.

You may not be able to practice giving a tithe to the poor
according to the year of tithing since you are not under a theocratic
government, also most churches are not following it. On your own, you may set
aside the tithe for the poor different from the normal tithe that you give to
the priest – your pastor. Look for the poor around you and give to them, and
the good Lord will bless you for it.

What
is My Purpose in Life?

You might have asked yourself this question,
“what is my purpose in life?” Many people have asked the same
question too especially those who feel lost, and those who believe there should
be more to life than materialism.

To live a meaningful life, you must discover
your purpose. That is the major reason why God sent you into this world. The
singular assignment you must accomplish to be fulfilled in your pursuits in
life.

God’s Role in Finding Your Purpose

Many people don’t know what they are ordained
to do in life. They are spending time watching others break records and make
history while life seems to pass before them like a dream. They spend countless
hours on social media following others and helping them to build their
ambitions.

This is a waste of life and living without
sense of purpose. Anyone living like that cannot get any good thing out of
life. You need to commit yourself to find your purpose and start building on
it.

You would need God for that. The one who
created you has a specific reason for doing so. It is when you discover this
and work towards achieving it that you make meaning out of life. Success in
life does not depend upon your educational achievements. Whether you are a high
school graduate or a doctorate holder. The key to your success is God.

The challenges we face in life are much. If
you take a look at life generally, you’ll find that we fight battles on daily
basis. The Bible correctly put this as “sufficient for a day is the evil
thereof.” Matthew 6:34. There are evils we have to face daily. They make
achieving something out of life difficult or near impossible to do. God can
help us overcome our challenges, Jesus said “in this world, we shall have
tribulation, but cheer up, I have overcome the world.” John 16:33.

The madman of Gadarene was living a
purposeless life until he encountered Christ. Matthew 8:28-34. He received
deliverance from the legion of demons in him and became an evangelist
thereafter. Peter was a fisherman; poor and frustrated until he met Christ. He
received a new life and got commissioned into the real “fishing” God
ordained him for.

God had ordained you for something. You must
align your lifelong journey to this so that you will not only discover it but
achieve it also. Many people spend their lives pursuing the wrong things. They
jeopardize their mental health by going after what they are not created for.
God will not support or help you if you do things contrary to His will. Today
people don’t bother about seeking the face of God concerning their ambitions.
The main reason why many fail in realizing their ambitions.

What You Must Know to Find God’s Purpose For
Your Life

You must find your passion or your calling.
You must answer the question, “What is it that I’m meant to do with my life?”
When your purpose and vision for your life align, you will see how much bigger
your life is when you come face-to-face with it. This is what you can do to lay
the right foundation for your future. Commit the whole of your time, energy,
and resources to this because what you do with your energy, enthusiasm, your
love is the catalyst to your highest potential.

To know your purpose, you have to understand
and grasp it. What drives you? What makes you feel you need to do the thing
that brings you the greatest happiness and fulfillment? People say that
“you are the master of your destiny.” That is true to a point because
only you can determine what becomes of your life. God will only agree with you
concerning what you have chosen for yourself. He will not intrude into your
privacy, nor force His plan upon you.

When you begin to discover how you can live
your life with peace and contentment, it becomes harder and harder for you to
follow others. You will discover that most of the ideas and ways of life that
many are celebrating are not for you. This is when your life starts to have a
real direction. The real person that God made you be will start manifesting.

To further help your ambition of discovering
God’s purpose for your life you should know the gifts that God has given to
you. The Bible says “The gift of a man will make way for him.” Your
gift is an indication of what God ordained for your life. He gives you all that
you need to achieve His purpose, that is why you are having a gift that others
do not have.

Many people despise their gifts because they
don’t believe in them. They would rather have other people’s gifts, especially
those of celebrities and successful people. You should know that the thought of
God towards you is for good and not for evil. He can only give you the best.

What you have is what you need. Joseph in the
Bible had only one gift – interpreting dreams. That was enough to take him to
the throne. The God who knows all about your life had given you what you need,
your job is to discover it and start to use it.

Some people do not know the gift they have.
Anything you do without stress, or what you have that others do not have, can
be a gift. Some people have multiple gifts. Choosing one among them to fulfill
the purpose of God may be an issue. In all, you would have to pray for God to
direct you to the one you must use. If you don’t know your gift, you should
pray also, God can open your eyes and make you see it.

Never be like the servant that was given one
talent in the Bible. He buried it because he believed he deserved more than
that. He was looking at what was given to others, not realizing that each of
them was given according to their abilities. He regretted his action when he
was called upon to give account.

Looking at many of the current global events and
occurrences, one can be tempted to ask “does my life matter?”

Created in the Image of God

There’s not a lot to live for when you see life from a
human perspective. You may even prefer that you have not been born to witness,
war, epidemic, starvation, terrorism, natural disasters, and the current
pandemic that is ravaging the world.

If you look at the world and your life these days, you
may not see any real reason to be happy. You have to look at things from God’s
perspective. God is the creator of heaven and earth and its inhabitants. The
Bible says that the process of creation took a full six days. The climax of
God’s creation is man, a special being that He created to be like Himself.

In the beginning, the world was not the way it is today.
Everything was in perfect order, and man was in full control. God made him have
dominion over all that He created. God made a special garden where all things
that man would ever need were provided. The creator also ensures that man was
not left alone in the midst of animals in the garden. He made a helpmate for
him and also pay him constant visits.

God also allowed man to be part of his creative work. He
allowed him to name all the animals, and whatever Adam called them is what
their name is till today.

All of these are indications of what God originally
meant for man. The man was ordained to be god on earth, taking charge over all
other creatures. God started it with the first couple He created, and He
planned it to continue to all other humans on the surface of the earth. All of
these shows that your life matters to God.

The Change that Brought Evil

The disobedience of man in the garden of Eden brought
about a terrible change which was the Genesis of what we are experiencing
today. God was angry with the man when he discovered that he had erred. God
cursed him and cursed the ground for his sake. The curses made the ground lose
its natural resources and brought forth thorns and thistles instead. The man
had to labor before he can eat, and condemn to die so that he can return back
to earth from where he was formed.

In spite of all these God did not lose hope in man. He
provided a way of escape in Jesus Christ. He promised in the garden that the
seed of the woman will bruise the head of the serpent. That sees us Jesus
Christ, the one who came to destroy the works of the devil and take away our
sins. For God so loved the world that He has his only begotten son that
whosoever believes in him will not perish but inherit eternal life. That love
reveals the ultimate plan of God for man. He wants man to receive the salvation
brought to us by the shedding of the blood of Jesus. This will make us have His
life in us, and grant us access to His heavenly kingdom where we will live with
Him forever.

If you are not important to God, He will not border to
send Jesus to the world to die for your sin. Jesus suffered untold hardship in
the hands of the Jews because they never believed he is the Savior. They
arrested him, beat and nailed him to the cross like a common criminal. He
remained on the cross for three excruciating hours, and finally, he gave up the
ghost.

Who are you that the King of kings should die in your
place, it is only because you are important to God?

See Things the Right Way

For you to understand and appreciate what God had done
you need to see things the way God is seeing them. Many people cannot
appreciate God because they don’t see anything in being created in the image of
God. They lack understanding. You need to thank Him because whatever you are
seeing now is the tip of the iceberg. What is waiting for you in the kingdom of
God is what eyes have not seen, what ears have not heard, and what has not entered
into the hearts of men. Just imagine that.

Never sell out or lose all these blessings for whatever
the devil is offering you here. The devil can tempt you with money, power,
fame, pleasure, and worldly achievements. They are nothing compared with what
is waiting for you in heaven. You may not have much here on earth, but never
mind greater things are in stock for you up there. Remember the story of
Lazarus and the rich man in the Bible. Let that encourage you that God will
never disappoint those who trust in Him.

The world may hate, reject, or despise you, do not
border about them. It is what God says about you that matters. Study the word
of God to know what He says about you. That is the truth that you have to hold
onto. Begin to see yourself in the knowledge of the word of God, and you will
see how valuable you are to God. He is the final judge; He determines who wins
at the end. Stay with Him, and you will not regret it.

They take Sunday to be a day of celebration of the victory
of Jesus Christ over the powers of darkness.

Nevertheless, we should take note that the Bible didn’t
command us to worship on Sundays.

As a matter of fact, if you follow the Jewish
history, they usually had their worships on Saturdays.

In the old Testament, God commanded Israel that the Sabbath
day should be kept holy and used to remember God’s work, so they set Saturday
aside.

In this current dispensation, most Christians have set aside
Sunday to be a day to leave their works to honour.

But never forget, we ought to worship God everyday and not
just once in a week.
