Mary was a virgin betrothed to Joseph, a carpenter from the tribe of Judah. But the angel of God visited her to tell her that she will conceive by the power of the Holy Ghost and give birth to the son of God, who shall be called Jesus. We have a lot to learn from the life of Mary the mother of Jesus. She is an example of vessels unto honor in the Bible. God needed a vessel He wants to use to bring the savior into the world. He found a ready one in Mary. Mary was a virgin. Virginity was a virtue that all families uphold greatly in Israel. Spiritually, it represents purity. Just as a virgin is a woman that has not been defiled by any man, so is an individual without sin. The Bible says, “Blessed is he whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man whose sin the LORD does not count against him and in whose spirit is no deceit.” Psalm 32 1 God’s eyes are too pure to behold sin. Only a virgin would qualify to be the mother of Jesus. Mary was not the only virgin in the land. She was favored by God to play the role. Mary was a woman of faith. She knew the consequences of her being pregnant before getting married to her would-be husband.  When Joseph heard about what happened to her and planned to secretly divorce her, Mary was ready to accept her fate until the angel of God convinced Joseph to accept her back. She needed the understanding, and faith not only to believe in the strange thing that happened to her but to explain it to people who would ask her questions. She must also have the courage to face the shame that will come from rumors among the people that she had committed adultery, and was trying to hide it through the pregnancy from the Holy Ghost story. All of these combined and many more were the reasons why God gave Mary the grace to be a perfect vessel for the all-important role she played. Because God was involved, the whole thing went well. Joseph accepted the situation, and the people around them did not give them trouble. Mary gave birth to Jesus successfully in the manger, as foretold by the prophets of old.

Is Mary the real mother of Jesus? That question is what many people have asked for a long time. Jesus did not have a human father, but He has a mother. Jesus is God. Immediately after the miracle, Jesus instructed his disciples to get into the boat and get to the other side of the lake of Gennesaret. He did not follow them but went to a mountain to pray. He was there all night while the disciples were having it rough on the sea because there was a great storm raging on the sea.

 

The disciples were not expecting Jesus, so when they saw a figure walking toward them around midnight they became terrified, thinking he was a ghost. Jesus quickly identified himself to them, and in his characteristic manner assure them “It is I don’t be afraid.”

 

The disciples were fascinated seeing Jesus walking on water. They have seen him command a raging storm to cease, and the storm obeyed, but now they were seeing him walking on water. That was too much for them to quickly accept. Peter who was always the first person to speak out asked him whether he too can join him on the water. Peter wanted to find out whether that feat was only meant for Jesus or if it is something that a mortal man can do.

 

Jesus told him to come, and he came down from the boat. He discovered that he could stand on water, and he was not sinking. Peter started to walk toward Jesus, but out of curiosity, he shifted his attention from Jesus to look around him, then he saw the wind raging all around them. He became afraid and began to sink.

 

He quickly realized his mistake and cried out “Lord save me.” Jesus quickly reached out his hand and pulled him up, asking him why he doubted. When Jesus climbed into the boat, the wind ceased. Still trying to recover from the shock of what they have seen, all the disciples in the boat worshipped him, relieved that Jesus had saved them from another wind and waves.

The Bible made us understand that Jesus started His earthly ministry at the age of 30 and completed it with His death and resurrection at the age of 33. All the teachings and miracles of Jesus recorded in the Bible took place within the space of 3 years that He used for His ministry. The miracle of walking on the sea was one of these. When we look at the number of years Jesus spent on earth, we can conclude that it was short. But it was fulfilling and impactful. He was able to accomplish all that He was ordained to do. That was why He said on the cross before He died. “It is finished.” John 19:30. God wants us to know that it is not the number of years that we spent on earth that matters. It is what we were able to achieve in those years. More importantly, it is whether we have accomplished God’s purpose or not.

Jesus walked on the sea of Galilee. This body of water was one of the notable places mentioned in the New Testament. It was among the few places used by Jesus as a base for His earthly ministry. Jesus traveled on the sea many times, preaching to people.

 

Strange enough, the Sea of Galilee was also called Lake Tiberias and Lake Gennesaret as the Bible describes various activities that Jesus performed that are connected to the sea. Researchers have found that the sea is the lowest freshwater body on earth, 13 miles in length, and 8 miles in width. It is being fed by another river famous in the Bible – River Jordan. Among the cities located on the shore of the Sea of Galilee is Capernaum, the city Jesus used as a base for his ministry.

 

What one can see in and around Lake Gennesaret today has not changed much from what used to be when Jesus walked along the shore and journeyed on it from one end to another. That cannot be said about many other places that Jesus lived and visited when He was on earth. That alone makes the sea one of the few remaining landscapes that hosted Jesus Christ when He was on earth.

 

The story of Jesus walking on water had been told for centuries as recorded in the Bible. But that was not the only story connected to this sea. Jesus calmed the storm on the sea. Mark 4:35-41. He told Peter to cast his net to catch fish after he fished all night and caught nothing. Luke 5:1-5. Peter obeyed and got a net-breaking catch. This was also the place where Jesus called His disciples when He wanted to start His ministry. Jesus said many parables that are connected with water or rivers. The sea of Galilee provided the right setting for that.

As recorded in the book of Matthew 14:22-33. Jesus walked on water, while His disciples were in a boat. He was not the only one that did it. Peter got down from the boat and walked on the same water. That can only mean one thing. In the history of mankind, only two people had walked on water; Jesus and Peter.

 

There are lessons that God wants us to learn from this miracle, especially the part that concerns Peter. The first thing we can see is that Peter launched out in faith. He trusted in the word of Jesus, stepped into the water, and started walking on it. Faith is very important in our walk with God. The Bible says “without faith it is impossible to please Him.” Hebrews 11:6. Faith is what we need to get whatever we want from God. Peter must have remembered what happened at the shore of the same lake when Jesus told him to throw his fishing net into the water to catch fish. Peter knew what Jesus asked him to do was ridiculous and foolish. He obeyed and got a miracle. That must have prompted his faith that he too can walk on water like Jesus.

 

The second thing we noticed is that Jesus took his eyes off Jesus. That was a costly mistake because immediately he did that he started sinking into the water. The Bible admonishes us to “Look unto Jesus, the author and the finisher of our faith.” Hebrews 12:2. Looking into Jesus means having in focus what Jesus has said about the situation we are going through. That is what can help us hold unto our faith until our desire is granted. This is of utmost importance because when you request something from God, you don’t know when the answer will come. You have to keep waiting until you get the answer to your request.

 

The third thing we noticed is that Peter turned his attention to the wind. When he saw the wind, he was afraid and began to sink. Most of the time, faith and fear determine what we get from God. When we have faith we get God’s attention, when we have fear, we doubt and lose our blessings. Meanwhile, what you are seeing determines whether of faith or fear you would have. When Peter was looking at Jesus He was getting faith. When he turned to the wind and the raging storm, he got fear and the result was immediate. We are to turn away from our problems and focus on Jesus. You have no business looking around. When you do, you will see what Satan has set around you, and they are usually terrifying. 

 

You must focus on Jesus and He will take care of the challenges surrounding you. In the story of Jesus walking on water, it appeared as if Jesus did not have the solution to the wind. But when He entered the boat the violent wind calmed down all of a sudden. 

 

You will do yourself a lot of good by learning from what happened to peter. When he realized his mistake, he cried out in fear to the Lord, and Jesus quickly rescued him. Jesus will not close His ears to any distress call. God said “ Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor Me.” Jeremiah 33:3. Many of us like to carry unnecessary burdens. Please know that Jesus had been ordained to take away all our burdens. He is the burden bearer. He can take care of all problems no matter how critical they may be. You only need to read those things that were recorded in the Bible concerning Him to know this. Don’t wait until you start getting afraid and beginning to sink like Peter before you call on Jesus. He is beside you, call on Him now.

The name of Jesus when there was no such reference in the Bible? This is one of the questions that will come to your mind when you come to think that sometimes in the past people came up with some funny names for Jesus among which is the phrase Jesus h Christ.

The name of our savior which we know as Jesus Christ today has gone through lots of changes in the hands of men, partly because of translation from one language to another, and also because people sometimes want to mock the name of God.  

 

The first time the name Jesus appeared in the Bible was when angel Gabriel announced to Mary his mother that she will receive a special visitation from God which will enable her to conceive the savior of the world that will be called Jesus, “for he shall save his people from their sins. “

 

That name was originally written as יְהוֹשֻׁעַ (y’hoshuaʿ) in Hebrew form which means “Yahweh is Salvation.” The y’hoshua in the name is the same name for Joshua the son of Nun, the minister of Moses who took the Israelites into the Promised Land after the death of Moses. He is also a kind of savior for his people. 

 

What we have today as Jesus Christ is taken from the Latin version of the name which is Iesus. Latin being one of the languages in which the New Testament was written. Up till the 1st century, people have not attributed any middle initial to the name Jesus, but they have attached “Christ” to it. That too is not Jesus’s last name as some people supposed, but a title which has been translated from Latin to mean the anointed one. Pontius Pilate referred to this when he tried to ask the Jews whether they wanted him to release Jesus to them or Barabbas. He referred to him as “Jesus who is called Christ.”

 

A lot of stories have come up in history when Bible scholars tried to explain why do people say Jesus H. Christ, the most probable one is taken from the following letters of the Greek; chi ⟨Χ⟩ and rho ⟨Ρ⟩, which is a short form of writing Jesus Christ adopted by the early Christians, together with the letters of the IHC monogram which is the first three letters of Ἰησοῦς, the Greek version of the name Jesus. 

 

In the early part of the 19th century, some people who are familiar with the Latin letter version of the monogram inscriptions began to read them as they do the Latin version which can simply be written as JHC. They gave meaning to the letters as J represents Jesus, C represents Christ, but they could not immediately place the H in the middle, hence they concluded that must be Jesus’s middle initial. That was how the name Jesus H. Christ came to be. These people completely disregarded the Greek inscription which carried the lunate sigma that is still in use today.

 

From that time people began to use the name humorously, especially those who never believed in the Bible and what it says about the saving power of Jesus Christ. They find it funny that the savior of the world can be arrested and nailed to the cross together with criminals, and God who sent him cannot do anything about it. For that, they don’t see any reason why the name of Jesus should be revered hence they mock it at the slightest opportunity. 

 

This was a common phenomenon in those days as they also mock other things that have to do with God. For example, part of the story that was told then was that of a child who told his father that God has two names which are Harold and Andy, and he proceeded to pray the Lord’s prayer in this version; Our father who art in heaven, Harold be thy name…

 

The American author Mark Twain who was popularly known as Samuel Langhorne Clemens added his version to the ungodly humor in his autobiography. He grew up to meet people using the phrase Jesus H. Christ, and he could not help joining them. 

 

At a particular time, a printing press where he was apprenticed got a job from an American evangelist called Alexander Campbell, who wanted one of his sermons printed on pamphlets. In doing the job Mark Twain abbreviated the name of Jesus Christ as J. C which the evangelist did not find funny but chided him never to do that to the name of the Lord, and demanded a reprint of the job.

In annoyance, Twain instead of changing the names to Jesus Christ changed them to Jesus H. Christ.

The other name Christ came from men, through the Greek word Christos. It is a title that means the anointed one. Those are different personalities that people identified Jesus with, hence they cannot help giving him their names. Jesus proceeded to ask Peter, “But what about you? Who do you say I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” To which Jesus answered; “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven.” The full name of Jesus can only be revealed by God, whose begotten son is Jesus, not by experience or circumstances. In the New Testament Jesus was called many names like; the lamb of God, Emmanuel, Christ, the Word, the Door, Light of the world, and so on. Those are all his names with which he is to address the various challenges of our lives and give us perfect redemption, but his full name is what Peter gave in Matthew 16:16, as revealed by God.

Angel Gabriel, who visited Mary, the mother of Jesus, to tell her the particular assignment God had for her, also told her that she would give birth to the son of God, who shall be called Jesus. The other name, ‘Christ,’ did not come from God but was a title that Jesus also received during His earthly ministry. That name has the power to bring salvation to man.   The only name that God recognizes is the name of Jesus Christ. Satan cannot ignore this name, and whoever decides not to acknowledge the power and authority will lose their salvation.

Some people believe that the H in Jesus H Christ is the middle name of Jesus Christ. That is a lot of those who refused to read the Bible and discover who Jesus is, and what His name signifies.

 

After Jesus started His ministry, He faced lots of persecutions from the Jews among whom He lived. They believed they know His background, and so He cannot claim to be the Messiah.

 

They called Him all sorts of names, disregarding those names the scriptures revealed about Him, which the prophets of old had foretold.

Good as that may be, it is not acceptable to God. He does not want us to add or remove anything from the name of Jesus.

Jesus performed a lot of miracles during his time on earth. Jesus calming the storms when he was at sea with his disciples is an excellent example of the many great things he did. This story symbolizes hope even in stormy or difficult times; making us confident that Jesus is always able to save us from the storms of life.

JESUS CALMS THE STORM 

This story of Jesus calming the storm was recorded in multiple books in the New Testament (Mathew 8:23-27, Mark 4:35-41, Luke 8:22-25). Jesus had just finished speaking to a large crowd. He and his disciples took a boat to take them to the opposite shore. While they traveled, Jesus fell asleep. Suddenly, a great storm arose and everyone was afraid and in great panic. Jesus was still sleeping while strong winds blew the boat and the sea was chaotic. They were all in grave danger. The disciples were quite surprised to find Jesus sleeping when they faced such a huge threat. They wondered if he didn’t care that their boat was about to sink. They were filled with terror as the strong winds continued to blow.
 
 The disciples woke Jesus up from sleep asking him if he did not care they were about to drown. Jesus scolded them by asking “where is your faith?” He got up and rebuked the winds, commanding it to be still and immediately the storm was no more and the sea was calm. The disciples were surprised at the instant change; they said to each other, “who is this man? Even the winds and seas obey him”. The disciple’s reaction to the stormy sea was fear and panic. But, even when Jesus woke up to find the situation they were in, he was not afraid.
 
It is easy to feel fear when we encounter the storms of life. But, this story reminds us that with Jesus, every stormy sea can be made calm. We can also see that Jesus spoke forth what he wanted to see, maintaining a positive attitude when everyone else was afraid.
 
 Likewise, we should speak the right words and pray when we find ourselves in difficult situations. Don’t be fearful and without hope. Have faith and believe that everything is possible in the name of Jesus. With Jesus, every stormy sea/situation will be made calm.
